Abstract

Interpolymers are made by interpolymerizing in solution in a volatile organic solvent a mixture of monomers comprising not less than 45% to not more than 80% by weight of methyl methacrylate, not less than 0,25% to not more than 8% by weight of methacrylic acid and not less than 10% to not more than 55% by weight of a C1-C8 alkyl acrylate, e.g. methyl, ethyl, n-butyl and 2-ethyl hexyl acrylates. Polymerization solvents specified are benzene, toluene, toluene-acetone mixtures, methyl ethyl and isobutyl ketones, turpentine, nitropropane, aromatic naphthas, butanol-aromatic naphthas, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and the acetate and the butyl ether acetate thereof and a mixture of nitropropane, butanol and toluene. Polymerization may be carried out with the aid of catalysts, e.g. benzoyl, acetyl, lauryl, ditertiary butyl, methyl ethyl ketone, cumene, cyclohexanone, 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl and succinic acid peroxides, tertiarybutyl hydroperoxide and tertiarybutyl perbenzoate, which may be used as redox combinations with reducing agents such as dodecyl mercaptan. The resulting polymer solutions may be used for coating metal surfaces. Specification 809,658 is referred to.
