Abstract

882,020. Floor scrubbing machines. HOOVER Ltd. March 31, 1958 [April 12, 1957], No. 10271/58. Class 138 (1). In a floor-treating appliance including a reservoir for clean liquid 42 with means for dispensing it from the lower part thereof on to the floor, means for scrubbing the floor, means for sucking up dirty liquid therefrom, and a reservoir for dirty liquid in the form of a collapsible receptacle 46 removably mounted and nested within the upper end of the reservoir 42, at least a part of the space originally occupied by clean liquid 42 can be subsequently occupied by dirty liquid. The sucking means may include a separator 27 for the air and liquid, communicating with a nozzle 17, and means to apply suction thereto, the clean liquid reservoir being an open-topped vessel 16 with a seated suction joint between it and the separator. An eyelet 47 interconnects the upper parts of the clean liquid reservoir and receptacle 46 to equalise the pressures in them, and the latter may be such as subsequently to occupy substantially the whole of the space initially occupied by the clean liquid with dirty liquid. The former, for emptying and filling, may be readily separated from the separator 27 for removing the receptacle 46, which may be a bag of flexible material, e.g. thermoplastic sheet. The vessel 16 forms the lower part 12 of a casing, the upper part 13 of which, hinged thereto at 14 (the parts being closed by a latch 15), accommodates the separator 27 and a motor fan unit 28 for producing the required suction, an air tight seal being maintained between the parts 12 and 13 by gaskets 52, 53. From the nozzle 17 extends a suction pipe 18 to open into the separator 27, a handle 29 (forming an apparent continuation of the pipe 18) in a lug 31, also extending along the casing to a point beyond its upper end, the pipe 18 fitting into a bore 24 in a lug 23. Through the handle 29 and out through a hole 39 in it extends cable 36 from the fan unit 28, leading to a switch 37 and a plug 38, the cable being stored on cleats 40, 41. The nozzle 17 may be fitted with a squeegee unit 21 for sucking, or a scrubber, liquid 42 being then dispensed through a tube 20 and a valve 43, normally closed by a spring 44 and opened by an actuator 19 acting on the valve stem. The appliance is mounted on wheels 11.
