Abstract

881,969. Filters ; presses for separating liquids from solids; filter media. RITTER, J. June 1, 1959 [June 2, 1958; April 28, 1959], No. 18523/59; Class 46. [Also in Group XIII] In Fig. 1, material 4 to be filtered and pressed is conveyed at 2 to a moving band 3 of foamed rubber or foamed plastic or other porous and resilient medium which is drawn over a perforate sheet 5 between rotating rollers 8, 9. Prior to compression therebetween, filtration takes place through the band into a container 6. The band and material are compressed, whereupon liquid is squeezed out of band 3 and flows into container 6. On re-expansion of band 3 beyond the nip of the rollers the residue 4a of the material is pressed into contact with roller 8 and removed therefrom in particulate form by a brush roller 11. A second treatment of this material, like the first, may follow. In Fig. 3, concentric perforate cages 21 to 21<SP>11</SP> are provided each having a band of foam material 22 within it and attached, or not, to it. Here, it is the filtrate which is successively treated by bands and pairs of rollers after the first. In Fig. 5, only some of the unfiltered material is fed at 102 on the band 111; the remainder is fed at 113 on to a second band 106 moving counterclockwise. First filtrate from band 106 falls into a tank 117, communicating with main filtrate tank 113. Filtrate from above band 106 in the region between pre-pressing rollers 114, 115 and main rollers 104, 105 is discharged at 116 into tank 113. The main rollers are closer together than the pre-pressing rollers. In Fig. 6 the uppermost and lowermost bands are driven clockwise and the middle band counter-clockwise. Material introduced at A is thrice prepressed before reaching the main pressing rollers 124, 119<SP>1</SP> in the first run, the residue passing at B to the second run. Filtrates are collected in troughs 129 to 129<SP>11</SP>. Other modifications. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the second band 106 covers roller 104 only, parts 114, 116 and 117 being dispensed with. In this case the residue sticks to bands 106, 111 beyond the nip of the rollers and is removed therefrom by two other non-contacting rollers respectively. Each of the two last-mentioned rollers has associated with it a brush roller to remove the residue in particulate form. In another form, endless bands are dispensed with, the (stationary) filter medium being disposed on a circular disc over which a taper roller moves along with the material under treatment. Alternatively the filter medium may move. In all cases the pressing elements may be heated.
