July 17, 1959 [Sept. 25, 1958], No. 24565/59. Classes 42 (1) and 42 (2). [Also in Group IX] A covering for a hot calender roll of a pressing device comprises at least two juxtaposed layers, one being a steel wool layer and the other being an asbestos fabric strip having flexible stiffening inserts, e.g. stainless metal wires in asbestos yarns, which layers are wound helically around the roll. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 an asbestos fabric strip 10 is wound helically on the calender roll 12 and a steel wool layer 13 is provided on each winding. An asbestos fabric layer 10a is then wound over the layer 13. The steel wool layer may be stitched to the asbestos fabric or it may be incorporated in a flattened tube of the fabric so as to be applied to the roll at the same time as the fabric. A textile fabric may finally cover the outside of the roll.
