Abstract
An extreme pressure lubricant comprises a lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an additive composition obtained by reacting a zinc, copper or cadmium salt of a halogenated monocarboxylic acid with a nitrogen-containing polymer or a primary amine. The lubricating oil may be hydrocarbon or synthetic, while the halogenated monocarboxylic acid may be trichloracetic acid or an acid of general formula X (CXYCXY)nCY2COOH, where X and Y are either chlorine or fluorine, at least two of the X and Y atoms are chlorine and n is an integer up to 15. Primary amines mentioned are C15-C22 straight and branched chain amines, while the nitrogen-containing polymers mentioned are copolymers of N-vinyl pyrrolidone. In the examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions are described containing (a) the reaction product of the zinc salt of Cl(CF2CFCl)3CF2COOH and the mixture of C15-C22 primary n-alkylamines sold under the trade name "Primene", with or without zinc dibutyl dithiophosphate, (b) the reaction product of zinc trichloracetate or the zinc salt of Cl(CF2CFCl)3CF2COOH and a copolymer of N-vinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl acetate and lauryl fumarate or (c) the reaction product of zinc trichloroacetate and a copolymer of N-vinyl pyrolidone and a mixture of alkyl methacrylates. For comparison purposes, mineral lubricating oil compositions are described containing (d) the untreated copolymer of (b), or (e) zinc dibutyl dithiophosphate, with or without a reaction product of P2S5-treated polybutene, C9-C8 alkyl phenol, BaO and CO2.ALSO:An additive for lubricating oils (see Group III) may be prepared by reacting a zinc, copper or cadmium salt of a halogenated monocarboxylic acid with a nitrogen-containing polymer. The halogenated monocarboxylic acid may be trichloracetic acid or an acid of general formula X(CXYCXY)nCY2COOH, where X and Y are either chlorine or fluorine, at least two of the X and Y atoms are chlorine and n is an integer up to 15, while the nitrogen-containing polymer may be a copolymer of N-vinyl pyrrolidone. In the examples, (a) zinc trichloracetate or the zinc salt of Cl(CF2CFCl)3CF2COOH is reacted with a copolymer of N-vinyl pyrrolidone, vinyl acetate and lauryl fumarate and (b) zinc trichloracetate is reacted with a copolymer of N-vinyl pyrrolidone and a mixture of alkyl methacrylates.ALSO:An addition for lubricating oils (see Group III) may be prepared by reacting a zinc, copper or cadmium salt of a halogenated monocarboxylic acid with a primary amine. The halogenated monocarboxylic acid may be trichloroacetic acid or an acid of general formula X(CXYCXY)n CY2COOH, where X and Y are either chlorine or fluorine, at least two of the X and Y atoms are chlorine, and n is an integer up to 15, while the primary amine may be a C15-C22 straight or branched chain amine. In an example, the zinc salt of Cl(CF2CFCl)3CF2COOH is reacted with the mixture of C15-C22 primary n-alkylamines sold under the trade name "Primene".
