Abstract

881,497. Gripping devices for handling articles. ATLAS-WERKE A.G. Feb 17, 1958, No. 5151/58. Class 78 (4). [Also in Group XVII] In a stacking device comprising gripper units A, B, provided with gripper jaws as described in Specification 881,496, and supported on a column 34 which is movable vertically in a sleeve 35 in a frame 33, downward movement of the gripper jaws is automatically terminated before the jaws contact a surface on which the articles are to be deposited or from which articles are to be picked up, so as to leave a small gap between the jaws and the surface. As shown, rods 28, 29, secured to the gripper units, are guided in bearings 30, 31 in the frame 33 and are provided with rack teeth 123 which engage gear-wheels 119 secured on a rotatably mounted shaft 120 which is provided with a free-wheeling device 118 and a braking device comprising an electromagnetic clutch 128. As the gripper units approach the article supporting surface, feelers 53, 54 which are supported in sleeves on the units, engage the surface, further downward movement of the units causing heads 53a, 54a on the feelers to engage buffers 135, 136 on tappet rods 51, 52, which, through switch-operating levers 132, 133, actuate switches 130, 131 incorporated in switch gear 49, 50 to actuate the clutch 128, thereby stopping the downward movement. The driving means for raising and lowering the gripper units may be controlled to provide a reduction in speed towards the termination of the downward movement of the gripper units and a switch may be operated to reverse the driving means as soon as the gripped articles are released. The gripper jaws may be locked in their open position as described in Specification 881,496. Specification 769,720 also is referred to.
