Abstract

881,423. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. March 27, 1958 [April 3, 1957], No. 10894/57. Classes 103 (1) and 103 (1). A disc brake comprises a rotatable disc 3, a non-rotatable slotted base member 1 completely encircling the disc or a chord thereof, friction pads 21 associated with the base member and located on opposite sides of the slot in the base member, and brakeapplying mechanism for applying the pads against the disc. The embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 3 discloses a rotatable disc 3, a non-rotatable caliper type housing straddling the periphery of the brake disc 3 and having pads of frictional material 21 associated therewith, fluid pressureoperated piston and cylinder mechanisms 23 being operable to force the friction pads into frictional engagement with opposite sides of the disc and a base-plate 1 completely encircling the disc on a chord thereof, the radially inner ends of the limbs 26 of the housing being rigidly secured to said base-plate 1 on opposite sides of the disc, and the housing being fabricated from steel pressings. As shown, particularly in Figs. 1 and 3, the friction pads 21 are of rectangular form secured in place by retainer pins 61 passed through coaxial holes 60 and 70 in the limbs 69 and ears 59 and the parts 32 of the base-plate 1. The brake assembly includes a hand-operated mechanism comprising a caliper through which pads 22 are pressed against the side of the disc by operation of the pivoted bifurcated lever 51, 52 through rod 24b and lever 24a. Automatic adjustment mechanism may be incorporated with the piston and cylinder mechanisms. Specification 688,382 is referred to.
