Abstract

881,385. Spray-producers. ESMAY, P. O. Jan. 22, 1958 [Feb. 6, 1957], No. 2155/58. Class 69 (3). [Also in Group XVII] A spray gun for liquids or powders includes a cylindrical tube 10 in which a plunger tube 12, containing the material to be sprayed, is manually reciprocated, whereby at each downward or compression stroke of the tube 12 a limited quantity of material is sprayed from an outlet 18 and deflected by a deflector 85. An end cap 28 on the plunger tube has a hollow boss 37 providing a well 38 which opens into the material containing compartment of the plunger tube; the well is normally closed by a valve 44 urged downwardly by a spring 52 acting between a member 48 on the valve stem and the base of the plunger tube. A stack of thin discs 36 slidably engage the inner wall of the outer tube and, on the upstroke, air is drawn into the pumping space 16 via the annular space 22 between the tubes. On the downstroke the discs prevent the escape of air through that annular space. In operation the plunger tube is forced downwardly and the valve 44, Fig. 4, is opened to allow liquid or powder to pass into the well 38 and on the upstroke the valve closes and the material seeps into the space 16 via the gap between the valve stem and the bore 40 in the boss 37. Walls 65, 67 with diametrically opposed slots 73, 75 cause the liquid and air in the pumping space to take a tortuous path to the spray outlet. When spraying powder the wall 65 is omitted. Specification 881,386 is referred to.
