881,343. Distilling zinc. NATIONAL SMELTING CO. Ltd. Sept, 3, 1959 [Oct. 16, 1958], No. 33110/58. Class 82(1) Substantially pure zinc is obtained from lead containing both zinc and cadmium by distilling the lead to produce cadmium-containing zinc vapour which is partially condensed by contact with cooled solid body of zinc so that the uncondensed vapour becomes enriched in cadmium, collecting the molten zinc running off the solid body in a pool and heating the pool by direct conduction from the molten lead from which the zinc and cadmium have been distilled so that the cadmium-enriched vapour is redistilled from the pool which is thereby further impoverished in cadmium In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, zinc and cadmium-containing lead enters by a pipe 2 to fill a well 3 and overflows a lip 7 to flow downwards over the inner surface of a wall 5. Cadmium containing zinc vapour is condensed on a condenser 12 having cooling coils 18. The upper part of the condenser is provided with a heat insulating lining 14. At a certain thickness of deposit 19 the vapour condenses as liquid and drips into a tray 20 heated by lead which has flowed over the walls 5. Cadmiuim-enriched vapour redistills from the tray which thereby contains substantially pure zinc. Vacuum is maintained via a pipe 16 and cadmium-enriched zinc vapour condenses in a cold trap 15. The cold trap may be replaced by a bayonet-type cooler and an annular system of inclined shelves may be fitted around the condenser to form an additional zinc refluxing stage as described in Specification 846,152.
