Abstract

881,007. Viewing equipment for radioactive environment. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Nov. 3, 1958 [Nov. 5, 1957], No. 35176/58. Class 39(4) [Also in Group XX] Optical apparatus of use for observing the interior of sealed chambers containing radio active elements includes a cylindrical envelope 1 accommodated in an opening 2 in the chamber and is characterised on the one hand in that this envelope 1 is surrounded by bellows 47 made from a material preventing contamination of the environment by radio active dust and sealing connected at one end to a part of the observation apparatus 48 outside the chamber, said bellows 47 being expandable to cover that portion of the apparatus which was located in the interior of the chamber and the other end of the bellows being adapted to be closed by a sealing means 61 when the observation apparatus is withdrawn from the chamber, and is characterised on the other hand in that there are provided in the interior of the cylindrical envelope at least two cylindrical screens, for example 5, 6 and 7 of lead or similar material absorbing the radiation, which have the same cross-section as the envelope 1, each including a longitudinal opening parallel to the axis of the apparatus and said opening in each screen being arranged in alignment with a solid portion of each adjacent screen, a prism, for example 26a and 26b. being interposed between each pair of successive screens so as to direct the light rays issuing from the opening in one screen towards the opening in the following screen. The apparatus may be constructed as a periscope, in which case a rod 12 is used to control the movement of an observation prism (not shown) situated in front of the objective (not shown) of the periscope, and the images are erected by an erecting prism 35. The apparatus is provided with a mask 58 and lifting handles 59 and 52.
