Abstract

Cooled effluent from a carbon black furnace is passed into a p cylindrical "grit" separation chamber 19, grit being allowed to fall out of suspension and pass down into a second cylindrical chamber 20 of smaller cross-section. The furnace may be fed with liquid or gaseous hydrocarbon. Decomposition in the furnace may be effected by radiant heat, partial combustion of the feed, or hot combustion gas, with or without partial combustion of the feed. Cooling may be effected by indirect heat exchange with the atmosphere or cold water, or by direct heat exchange with sprayed water. In the latter case the suspended black may be cooled to a temperature of 1000-1600 DEG F., e.g. 1200 DEG F. Further cooling may be effected, e.g. to 600 DEG F., by indirect heat exchange with the atmosphere or another fluid. Further cooling may take place in chamber 19 by means of water sprayed from line 21 (Figs. 1 and 2) or lines 21 and 42 (Fig. 2). Black may be recovered from suspension by passage in succession through a primary cyclone <PICT:0880576/III/1> <PICT:0880576/III/2> separator 23, a secondary cyclone separator 26, and a plurality of bag filters 28. Increased separation of grit and black may be effected by passage of secondary gas through chamber 19. The secondary gas may be injected from line 36, 38, 39, or 41 via line 34 and chamber 20, while the primary effluent is injected from line 18 (Figs. 1 and 2) or lines 18 and 42 (Fig. 2). Alternatively the secondary gas may be injected from line 38, 39, or 41 via lines 34 and 18, while the primary effluent is injected from line 42 (Fig. 2).
