Abstract

879,677. Valve oscillator circuits; radio frequency output couplings. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO. Ltd. Oct. 2, 1959 [April 28, 1959], No. 14451/59. Classes 40(6) and 40(7) [Also in Group XL(b)] A number of similar magnetrons are synchronized by connecting them in parallel by four-arm directional couplers. As shown, two magnetrons Ml, M2 are connected in phase quadrature to the input arms of a coupler DC1 which is preferably of the waveguide 3db. five-slot type. The output arms are connected respectively to a useful load L and to an auxiliary load D1 through a phase-shifter P1 and an adjustable mismatched 'impedance S1. When the outputs of the magnetrons are of the same amplitude and frequency and in the required phase-relationship, there is no output to the auxiliary load Dl, but if these conditions are violated, an output is produced. With the phase-shifter P1 adjusted for minimum output to the auxiliary load Dl, maximum "error power" is reflected back to the coupler and is effective in pulling the magnetrons into step. The Specification describes a circuit for connecting 2<SP>n</SP> magnetrons in parallel. The magnetrons are connected in pairs as shown, the outputs of the couplers being connected in pairs to further couplers and so on.
