879,671. Differential gear. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Jan. 8, 1959 [June 9, 1958], No. 779/59. Class 80 (2). In a limited slip differential mechanism of the planetary bevel gear type, clutch members 46, 48 or the side pinions 32, 34 are pressed into engagement with conical surfaces 50, 52 formed in the casing 12, one of each pair of interengaging friction surfaces being of threaded or like form to prevent galling in operation. As shown in Fig. 3, flat-topped threads 54 are provided on the clutch members 50, 52. Pinions 32, 34 are urged outwardly by groups of springs 72 to supplement the axial component of force resulting from the gear tooth pressure, which latter is increased by making the pitch cone angle of side pinions 32, 34 greater than that of the meshing pinions 42, 44.
