Abstract

1,142,960. Differential gears; friction clutches. BORG-WARNER CORP. 6 July, 1966 [29 July, 1965], No. 30395/66. Headings F2C and F2D. A motor vehicle &c. limited slip differential of the planetary bevel gear type, has output shafts S clutched through members 35, slidably splined thereon, to an input housing 11 by inserts I, each having a drive tab 59 received in a slot 19 in the housing and a conical friction surface 54 engaged by the member 35, to resist differential action. The clutches are engaged by spring pressure reinforced by the force due to tooth reaction. Each of the conical friction surfaces of the members 35 is formed with a spirally progressive groove 37, and the inserts I with holes 63 for lubrication. The inserts I may have more than one tab 59, the housing having a corresponding number of slots 19. Again, Fig. 2 (not shown), the members 35 and side gears 27 are formed integrally (69), and the spring biasing of each insert (I 2 ) into engagement with the integral member (69) is provided by a spring (75) inserted between the insert (I 2 ) and an axial extension of the integral member (69) along the shaft S.
