Abstract

996,163. Differential gear. DANA CORPORATION. Aug. 14, 1962, No. 31220/62. Heading F2D. In a motor-vehicle limited slip differential of the planetary bevel gear type, having at least one or both output side wheels 50. 52 axially movable and clutched to an input casing 10 by interleaved friction discs 70, 82, arranged therebetween, the clutch discs are normally engaged, to resist differential action, against abutments 76 formed on, or connected to, the input casing by Belleville springs 72 which pre-load each clutch independent of the gear train avoiding adverse meshing thereof, the clutch discs being further engaged, as the input torque increases, by outward thrust on the side wheels 50, 52 by gear tooth pressure. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the clutch discs are preloaded against the outer wall of the input casing by the Belleville spring which reacts on a ring axially retained against an abutment formed on the input casing and in Fig. 3 (not shown) the clutch discs are pre-loaded against a pressure plate connected to the input casing by axially arranged bolts, providing external adjustment of the pre-load.
