[Also in Group XXIII] A method and apparatus for cutting grooves in curvilinearly profiled passes of a grooved roll intended for making relief-patterned bars comprises a tool which is periodically moved over the range of the roll pass about an axis tangential to the centre of the pass, the roll being rotated to obtain a relative feed movement of the tool. The work 1, Figs. 1 and 2, is rotated to effect the cutting of a sinusoidal groove in the roll pass 2. A tool 4 is mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis in a holder 5 and the non-cutting end of the tool is connected to a crank 9. The holder 5 is carried in a yoke 11 which can swing about the axis 6 (perpendicular to the paper in Fig. 1). A rod 7 is connected to the holder and secured for adjustment in a slot 7<SP>1</SP> in a disc 10. The latter is rotated in timed relation with the work to effect the cutting. The crank 9 is pivoted to a connecting rod 8 also secured to the disc 10 but lagging the connection of the rod 7 by ninety degrees. A milling cutter or grinding " pencil " may be used to cut the groove in which cases the crank and connecting rod 9, 8 for automatically adjusting the cutting edge is omitted and a driving motor for the tool is carried by the swinging yoke.
