Abstract
Polyesters having cold-drawing properties and having both a crystalline form (melting point 195 DEG -245 DEG C.) and an amorphous form (softening range 65 DEG -95 DEG C.) are made by polycondensing an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (or ester thereof) with a mixture of dihydric alcohols comprising 90-60 mol per cent of p-xylylene glycol and 10-40 mol per cent of an alkylene glycol. The aromatic dicarboxylic acid may be terephthalic, p, p1-diphenyldicarboxylic, diphenoxyethane-4, 41-dicarboxylic, diphenoxy-p-xylene-4, 41-dicarboxylic, or p-phenylenediacetic acid. The alkylene glycol may be of formula: <FORM:0879124/IV (a)/1> where R is hydrogen or alkyl, X is a methylene or alkylene radical and n is 0-30. Polycondensation may be effected by reacting all three components simultaneously or by first reacting the aromatic dicarboxylic acid (or ester) with p-xylylene glycol, then adding the alkylene glycol and effecting further reaction. Stabilizers such as polyhydric alcohols or alkyl or aryl phosphates or phosphites may be included in the polycondensation mixture. Examples describe the manufacture of polyesters by reacting dimethyl terephthalate, p-xylylene glycol and ethylene-, tetramethylene- or hexamethylene-glycol. Some of them are soluble in acetone, dimethyl formamide, acetyl morpholine and propylene carbonate.
