Abstract
878,864. Junction boxes. ELECTRICAL COMMUNICATION ENTERPRISES PTY. Ltd. May 12, 1959 [May 14, 1958], No. 16304/59. Class 38 (1). A hermetically sealed cabinet for crossconnections between terminals of multi-wire cables comprises a hollow base portion 5 having apertures 9 in its upper face accommodating cable terminal units 10 or sealing plugs 11, a cover 6 enclosing the terminal units, a rolling ring seal 20 between the cover and the base and a cap 7 to secure the cover. A hollow column 12, rigidly fixed to the base 5, has a coaxial spindle 13 and between them is disposed a column 15 flexibly retained in the cover 6 by a metal ball seating 19. Wires or jumper guards 16, attached to the column 12 and base 5, carry horizontally disposed jumper rings 17 which act as guides for cross-connecting wires and support the terminal units 10. The upper end of the spindle 13 has a screw-threaded shank 14 carrying a nut 21 which has a flange 22 imprisoned by a shoulder 23 on the cover and when the nut is turned the cover is raised or is forced downwards to engage a rolling ring seal 20 between the cover and the base, the raising of the cover moving the ring 20 into a groove 28. The cap also engages the shank 14 and may be fixed by a lock 27 to secure the cover. The cover may be held in raised position by a spring-controlled latch 29 engaging an abutment 40 on column 12. The terminal units 10, e.g. of epoxy resin, have each a central recess 32 to accommodate the jumper rings 17 and shoulders 30, 31 carrying rows of terminal tags 35, 34. The inner terminals and outer terminals respectively of adjacent units may be connected by removable links 38. Insulated fanning strips or tags 39, staggered from the terminals, are also provided on the shoulders to support cross-connecting jumpering wires which may be required to connect any two terminals which cannot be directly connected by a link. A multi-wire cable 36 enters each terminal unit through a cylindrical base portion 37 and the individual conductors are connected to the appropriate terminal tags. Metal inserts may be provided in the terminal units to connect the outer screen of a cable electrically, through the jumper guards, to the cabinet. Seals are provided between the cover 6 and the spindle 13 and in apertures 9 for engagement with the units 10 or plugs 11. The base portion may be formed as a conduit for the cables and embedded in a suitable foundation. In a modified form, a jumper guard, jumper rings and fanning tags are made in one unit comprising a channel-shaped member which is attached to the base of the recess in the terminal unit and has fingers extending outwards beyond the terminal unit to fan out the jumpering wires, the jumper guard being integrally attached to the channel by brackets welded to the fingers.
