Abstract
Butylene is dehydrogenated to butadiene in the presence of a coated, particulate potassium-promoted catalyst, prepared by treating the catalyst particles with vapours of an organic compound capable of being polymerised to a solid polymer by the alkaline action of the potassium compound in the catalyst. In Example IV, butylene was dehydrogenated to butadiene using an iron oxide/chromium oxide/potassium carbonate catalyst which had been treated with acrolein vapours and then steamed at 620 DEG C. to remove the polymer coating.ALSO:A coated, particulate potassium-promoted catalyst is prepared by treating the catalyst particles with vapours of an organic compound capable of being polymerized to a solid polymer by the alkaline action of the potassium compound in the catalyst. Specified monomers are acrolein. methacrolein, methyl vinyl ketone and propylene oxide. Examples I and II describe the coating of an iron oxide/chromium oxide/potassium carbonate catalyst by treating with acrolein; Example III states that methacrolein and methyl vinyl ketone give similar results but that styrene, divinyl benzene and acrylonitrile were ineffective. In Example IV, butylene was dehydrogenated to butadiene using an iron oxide/chromium oxide/potassium carbonate catalyst which had been treated with acrolein vapours and then steamed at 620 DEG C. to remove the polymer coating.
