Abstract
878,497. Annealing coiled strip. WILSON, L. Dec. 13, 1957 [Feb. 13, 1957], No. 38748/57. Class 72 A method of annealing strip metal includes the steps of open re-coiling the strip into an opened coil the laps of which are spaced apart and subjecting the opened coil to an annealing temperature by forcing heated gas vertically between the laps of the open coil for a period sufficient to effect heating of the strip to an annealing temperature all the while maintaining the axis of the coil vertical. An unannealed coil is set on rack R on turn table 1 and the strip lead through braking system B, which is used to maintain a back tension during re-coiling, and on to mandrel 17 by which the end of the strip is gripped. Turntable 7 driven by motor 16 rotates mandrel 17 and rack R on to which the opened coil is wound, each lap being separated by the continuous introduction between the laps of cord 29. This cord may be round or flat with a thickness of 1¢ to 3 times the thickness of the strip and it may be made of a variety of materials including nylon. When the open re-coiling is completed, the cord 29 is removed from the coil by means of spool 28 driven by motor 35 drawing it from the coil through guides 38 and 36 (Fig. 3). The open coil on rack R is transported to the furnace and covered by an inner gas tight cover F and an outer heating bell G. Combustion tubes 68 heat the furnace and its contents and the inner cover F is filled via pipe 75 with an inert gas which is circulated through the coil by fan 42. After annealing, the open coil on its rack R is placed on turntable 1 and re-coiled into a tight coil. Specifications 878,499 and 878,500 are referred to.
