Abstract
878,077. Differential gear. THORNTON AXLE Inc. July 10, 1958, No. 22208/58. Class 80 (2). A planetary differential gear is rendered selflocking by clutch plates 52, 54, 56, 58 loosely splined to output side wheels 32, 66, and clutch plates 76, 80 splined to an input casing 10. Pressure rings 84, 128 are splined to the casing 10 and are formed with cam surfaces 124, 126 co-operating with complementary surfaces of balance bars 114 mounted on spider trunnions 100 carrying planet pinions 94. In operation, as the casing 10 rotates the balance bars lag and act on the forward or rearward cam surfaces of the pressure rings 84, 128, moving them apart, which engages the clutch plates and so locks the differential gear. During a turn, the accelerating tendency of the outside wheel causes the spider trunnions 100 and balance bars 114 to advance relatively to the casing 10 to their neutral position, thus releasing the clutch pressure for normal differential action. In a modification each balance bar is mounted on a circular section end of a trunnion and has a tendency to rotate on the trunnion so as to act on diagonally opposite cam surfaces of the pressure rings which are thus moved apart.
