A machine A for filling cushions which are arcuate in shape has a base 10, an arcuate hopper B with a lower plate member 24, provided with an arcuate track 29 to guide a pusher member, and an upper plate member 47, a pusher member consisting of plate 94 and ram 95 and a hydraulically operated piston in a cylinder 90 to move said ram. The plates 24, 47 have overlapping movable plates 32, 72 respectively, completing the upper and lower parts of the hopper and rendering the hopper extensible laterally. Plate member 32 is secured to a rack 38 slidably mounted in a recess 39 of support 25 and engaging a pinion 40 driven by a rack 41 slidably mounted in recess 42 and moved by a piston actuated within a cylinder 46 by the hydraulic system. Plate 72 is moved on supporting rods 57, 58 by plate 32, the arcuate wall 77 secured to plate 72 being engaged between guides 37 and wall 36 secured to plate 32 when the upper part of the hopper is lowered into position by means of a piston which moves into cylinder 143 and is attached to the lift arm 66 on which the upper part of the hopper is supported. A pump 119 driven by a motor 137 provides fluid under pressure to operate the hydraulic system. In using the machine, hopper B is opened and the spring assembly and padding filler unit placed therein. The hopper is closed and the sides moved together to compress slightly the filler unit; the cushion cover C being placed on the outer open end of the hopper and moved up to point X. The pusher plate 94 is then caused to move forward to force the filler unit into the cover C.
