Abstract

Carbon black is produced by reacting one or more hydrocarbons with carbon dioxide at a temperature of 900-1200 DEG C. for a period of 0.001-0.20 sec., preferably 0.001-0.1 sec., and then cooling the reaction mixture to below 800 DEG C. within a period of 0.001-0.01 sec. The hydrocarbon reactant may be natural gas or a residual gas from a FischerTropsch or methanol synthesis, or a mineral oil refining plant. The reactants may be heated before and/or after mixing. A nickel or cobalt catalyst may be present to produce a gaseous product containing methane ethane, and ethylene. All or a portion of the gaseous reaction product may be recycled, converted to carbon dioxide and then recycled, or burnt to heat the reactants before and/or after mixing. Unreacted hydrocarbon gas may be added to the product gas to raise its heating power.
