Abstract
In the bonding agent for elastomers of Specification 877,035 comprising a solution of chlorinated rubber, halogenated polychlorobutadiene and a dinitroso-aromatic compound, the dinitroso-aromatic compound is replaced by a quinone dioxime and a mild oxidizing agent; under the conditions of cure these react to form the dinitroso-aromatic compound. Quinone dioximes specified are p-benzoquinone dioxime, 2, 5-dichloro p-benzoquinone dioxime, toluquinone dioxime, p-xyloquinone dioxime, thymoquinone dioxime, 1, 2-naphthoquinone dioxime, and 1, 4-naphthoquinone dioxime. Oxidizing agents preferred are 2, 21-dithiobis benzothiazole and tetramethyl thiuram disulphide. One typical agent comprises a solution in 20 parts of xylene of 3,5 parts chlorinated rubber of 125 cps. viscosity (determined in 20% w/w toluene solution at 25 DEG C.), 1,5 parts brominated Neoprene, 0,25 part dibasic lead phosphite, 0,4 part p-benzoquinone dioxime, 0,7 part 2, 21-dithiobis-benzothiazole, and 0,8 part carbon black. In an example, this bonding agent was applied by brushing to the surface of clean, dry steel strip, the resulting film was allowed to dry in air for twenty minutes following which a layer of freshly sheeted, uncured natural or QR-S rubber stock was pressed into intimate contact with the partially dried film of the bonding agent on the metal surface; the resulting assembly was then cured at 307 DEG F. for 20 minutes.
