Abstract

A bonding agent for elastomers comprises a solution of chlorinated rubber, halogenated polychlorobutadiene and a dinitroso-aromatic compound. Preferably, of the total of halogenated rubber components the proportion of chlorinated rubber is 50%-90% and the proportion of the dinitroso-aromatic compound amounts to 2%-20% of that total. Brominated and chlorinated polychlorobutadienes are preferred. Dinitrosoaromatic compounds specified are p-dinitrosobenzene, p-dinitrosotoluene, 1, 4-dinitrosonaphthalene, 1, 2-dinitrosonaphthalene, m-dinitrosobenzene and dinitroso derivatives of dihydric phenols such as dinitrosoresorcinol, dinitrosoorcinol and dinitrosophloroglucinol monomethyl ether. As solvents there may be employed xylene with or without methyl ethyl ketone, coal tar naphthas, benzene and toluene. The typical agent comprises a solution in 20 parts of xylene of 4 parts chlorinated rubber of 125 cps. viscosity (determined in 20% w/w toluene solution at 25 DEG C.), 1,5 parts brominated Neoprene, 0,25 part dibasic lead phosphite, 0,6 part p-dinitroso-benzene and 0,1 part wax. In an example, this bonding agent was applied by brushing to the surface of clean, dry steel strip, the resulting film was allowed to dry in air for twenty minutes following which a layer of freshly sheeted, uncured GR-S rubber stock was pressed into intimate contact with the partially dried film of the bonding agent on the metal surface; the resulting assembly was then cured at 307 DEG F. for 20 minutes.
