Class 40(3) [Also in Groups XI and XX] A dust laden gas is illuminated and observed photo-electrically through windows comprising a transparent plate across a tube which is divided by partitions to form passages with cross-section small compared with the diameter of the tube. For use in reduced pressure ducts the tube 11, Fig. 2, extends into the duct and contains partitions 16 similar to those 23 in Fig. 4. Air is sucked in to the duct through the holes 14 outside the duct wall 10. When the pressure in the duct is above atmospheric, gas enters the tube 21, Fig. 4, and a reservoir 27 is provided to collect the dust. The partition section 23, reservoir 27 and transparent plate 22 are inside the duct wall 20 to eliminate temperature gradients and convection currents. Alternatively a heater may be provided for this purpose. The partitions may comprise parallel plates, tubes or a honeycomb assembly.
