877,892. Stuffing-box substitutes. VOLKSEIGENER BERTRIEB GORLITZER MASCHINENBAU. Sept. 24, 1958, No. 30496/58. Class 122 (5). A labyrinth packing between relatively rotatable ports 1, 2, particularly for steam or gas turbines, comprises throttle edges which are arranged on both the stationary and rotatable ports and are of single or multiple helical form so as to restrict the flow of gaseous medium from the high-pressure space to the lowpressure space. The throttle edges may be formed integrally with the ports 1, 2 or of sheet metal strips mortised to such ports; they may be inclined towards the high-pressure space and have equal or unequal spacing on the two ports. If desired, the sealing gap may follow a zig-zag path by providing the throttle edges on both sides of a number of concentric cylinders of which alternate cylinders are attached to the respective stationary and rotatable parts.
