A braiding machine bobbin holder comprises a plurality of bobbins from each of which a component thread of threads collectively forming a strand is drawn; and each bobbin is subjected, during the withdrawal therefrom of the thread, to a torque which tends to turn the bobbin in the rewinding direction and which becomes effective upon any slackening in thread tension. In one form, bobbins 9-13 are coaxially arranged along a spindle 8 about which they are free to rotate, under the pull of their threads 31, each'in the sense opposite to that of its neighbour or neighbours, so that, if the thread of one bobbin should become slack, it will be re-wound by the drag on its bobbin of the immediately adjacent bobbin or bobbins, acting through friction discs 26 interposed between the bobbins. The threads are directed by helically arranged grooves 31 on the cylindrical surface of a guide 30 to a collecting point 28. The resultant strand 25 passes under a pin 24 at the end of a lever 23 which, when deflected counter-clockwise (as seen) squeezes the bobbin assembly between opposed braking discs 16, 17; and the strand then passes around a roller 35 on a lever 36 which, under the pull of the strand, can swing towards lever 23, to allow it to free the bobbins. Thence, the strand proceeds under a roller 37 and leaves over a swivelling roller 39. In an alternative arrangement, the bobbins are mounted on parallel spindles one above the other, and are in contact through friction surfaces provided on their peripheral edges. The tension of the strand may be maintained by spring-loaded or weightloaded slides.
