Abstract

877,709. Grinding shouldered work. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. Nov. 2, 1959 [March 23, 1959], No. 37089/59. Class 60. A grinding machine for grinding a shouldered cylindrical work-piece 16, Fig. 1, held between fixed centres 14, 15, comprises manuallycontrollable means for reciprocating the wheel 18 between predetermined limits when grinding the cylindrical portion, and without reciprocation beyond one of the limits for grinding the shouldered portion 17 by bringing a face 8b of the wheel into contact with the work, together with means for securing a -control member, 78, selectively in an intermediate position when either reciprocation or shoulder-feed are not required. The motor-driven grinding-wheel spindle 19 drives through a belt 70 and a worm-shaft 67, Fig. 2, a worm-wheel 65 and shaft 53 having its axis normal to that of the spindle 19 and having at its inner end a roller 52, Fig. 1, mounted eccentrically of the shaftaxis. The roller 52 engages a vertical wall 54 of a flat 51 on a follower 50 slidably mounted parallel to the spindle, the forward end of the follower bearing against a ball-end 38 carried by one arm 26 of a yoke which is pivoted at 27, Fig. 3, and is in engagement with a collar 28 on the wheel spindle 19 ; when the latter is driven by a motor 24 and belt 23, the yoke is oscillated by the eccentrically-mounted roller 52 to reciprocate the wheel periphery across the work, radial feed being effected by conventional means. A spring-biased plunger 47 maintaining the bolt-head 38 in contact with the follower 50 and the wall 54 in contact with the roller 52. The flat 51 is sufficiently wide to allow the follower to be moved to the left by a cam 76 to a point at which the roller ceases to make contact with the wall 54, thus stopping the oscillation motion of the yoke ; further rotation of the cam moves the ball-end 38 beyond its normal travel to bring the face 18b of the wheel into contact with the shoulder 17, against the further compression of the spring biasing the plunger 47. The cam 76, shaped as shown in Fig. 2, is manually operable by a lever 78 at the end of a shaft 75 and a gauge 87 indicates the travel of the spindle 19 during shoulder-grinding. For an operation involving no shoulder-grinding, the lever 78 may be prevented from movement to the over-riding position by a hinged stop, or if reciprocation is not required a second stop is available to permit movement of the lever only in the direction of shoulder grinding ; the stops may be used together to lock the lever intermediately when reciprocation and shoulder-feed are not required.
