Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4) A process of producing high permeability non- directional silicon-iron sheet stock containing from 2.0% to 3.5% silicon, comprises producing a stock in which the crystals are oriented with a (100) plane parallel to the surface of the stock, the cube edges being randomly oriented in the plane of the stock, subjecting said stock to a cold reduction of 55% to 85% and annealing said stock at a temperature of 1400‹ F. to 2200‹ F. in a non-carburizing reducing atmosphere. In an example the initial stock is formed by casting the silicon iron alloy between parallel cooling surfaces having a width and length many times the distance of separation of the surfaces and the cast material is hot rolled before the cold rolling operation. If the initial stock has been cast to size and requires no hot rolling it is annealed before being cold rolled. Where a low carbon content is desired, e.g. 0.007% or less, decarburization may be practised in conjunction with the annealing treatment which may be box annealing or open annealing. The example exhibited . straight grain permeabilities at H M = 10 oersteds of 1550, cross grain permeabilities of 1520 and intermediate permeabilities in directions lying between the straight grain and the cross-grain.
