A hollow gymnasium beam is made up of a strip of non-metallic material 11 folded longitudinally with its edges 12, 13 secured to the edges of a second flat non-metallic strip 14. As shown, a plurality of flat timber laminations are bonded together and then moulded to form the component 11, the edges 12, 13 being closer than shown in Fig. 2. The edges 12, 13 are sprung apart to receive the e.g. laminated strip 14, the contacting surfaces having previously been coated with adhesive.
