Abstract
877,233. Lubricating bearings. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. March 19, 1959 [March 19, 1958], No. 8856/58. Classes 12 (1) and 12 (3). In a plain bearing of the spiral type comprising an upper bearing surface 9, a lower bearing surface 8 and a principal step 11, pressure-control means are provided for controlling, during normal operation of the bearing, the pressure of the liquid lubricant within the clearance between the cylindrical journal 1 and the bearing within the region which extends 180 degrees in an upstream direction from the principal step 11. The upper bearing surface 9 is semi-cylindrical and of larger radius than the semi-cylindrical lower bearing surface 10, the surfaces being interconnected by the principal step 11 at one side and a smaller auxiliary step 12 at the opposite side. Oil under pressure is introduced into the bearing, at the region 13 adjacent the principal step 11, through passages 32, 33, 34, 35 and a narrow slot 43 in such a manner as to prevent foaming of the oil. On rotation of the journal 1, the oil is carried around the bearing through the progressively reducing clearance and escapes at the ends of the bearing, passing over the surfaces of weirs 51, 52 to collector rings 53, 54, the upper halves of which are provided with splash shields 55, 56. Oil bleed grooves 61, 62 are provided at the ends of the slot 43. The lower bearing member 3 has formed in its bearing surface two relatively deep circumferentially extending parallel grooves 21 and 22 located just upstream of the principal step 12. The grooves are interconnected by a passage .23 which is connected by way of passages 26, 79 to an adjustable pressure-relief valve 86, forming the subject-matter of Specification 877,234, which controls the oil pressure in the grooves 21, 22 during normal operation. The valve 86 also includes control means for supplying high-pressure oil to the grooves 21 and 22 during starting-up and stopping operations to jack up the journal on a film of oil. The bearing members 2, 3 are assembled with the aid of two dowel pins inserted into bores 63 ... 66. Specifications 684,247 and 865,531 also are referred to.
