A method of reproducing drawings and pictures consists in placing a thin plate of transparent plastic over a drawing or picture to be copied, tracing the drawing or picture in ink or colour on the surface of the plate or engraving the drawing or picture on the surface with a fine-pointed tool or scriber, the lines being subsequently charged with ink, placing a sheet of damp paper over the plate and applying pressure to transfer the ink or colour to the paper. Engraving is used when several copies are required. To obtain non-inverted copies, the drawing is traced in pencil on a matt surface of the plastic plate, which is then inverted and placed on a plain paper sheet, the drawing being traced or engraved on the opposite, polished surface of the plate. Pressure may be applied by a domestic wringer or a squeeze roller. The traced or engraved picture may be laid on a glass sheet mounted in a frame, the damp sheet laid thereon, a hinged cover plate closed down, and pressure applied by a squeegee roller. The cover may be of transparent plastic. Tracing may be done in different colours, which are transferred simultaneously to the paper. A suitable ink composition comprises a finely divided pigment insoluble in water, lanoline, gum arabic, glycerine, and a mucilage gum. Rape oil or oil of spike lavender can be used instead of or as well as lanoline, and gum tragacanth instead of gum arabic.
