Abstract
This means enables a document, television or VDU screen, or wall or screen upon which an image is projected to be annotated without itself being marked. Said means comprises a sheet (22) of transparent material having on one side a peelable adhesive of the kind which allows it to adhere temporarily to the surface of a document, (20) on which it is overlaid, but which also allows the sheet to be peeled away easily without leaving any of the adhesive on the surface, and a marker instrument for marking the overlaid sheet to direct attention thereto. The embodiment shown is for use with a road map in a car. The adhesive may, for instance, be that used for the well-known pads of paper slips sold under the Trade mark POST-IT of the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company. <IMAGE>
Description
DOCUMENT ANNOTATING MEANS
This invention relates to document annotating means, for enabling a document (as defined below) to be annotated without itself being marked. The word "document" here means anything that conveys visual information for which annotation may be required, and not only paper documents. Examples include maps or other documents printed on paper or other sheet material, screens or walls onto which an image is projected, by a slide or film projector for instance, television or visual display unit screens, and so on.
According to the invention a document annotating means comprises a sheet of transparent material having on one side a peelable adhesive of the kind which allows a sheet to which it is applied to adhere temporarily to a surface, but which also allows the sheet to be peeled away easily without leaving any of the adhesive on the surface.
The adhesive may, for instance, be that used for the well-known pads of paper slips sold under the Trade
Mark POST-IT of the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing
Company.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows part of the fascia of a motor car with an atlas in use to guide the driver along his or her route, a page of the atlas being annotated using an annotating means according to the invention; and
Figure 2 shows an annotating means in kit form in which it may typically be sold to the user.
In Figure 1 a road atlas 10 is held open by a spring clip 12 suspended from a hook member 14 having a self adhesive back plate 16, which is attached to any convenient part of the vehicle so that the driver may see the exposed pages of the atlas, for example to the fascia 18. The maps printed on the open pages of the atlas 10 are not shown in Figure 1.
As shown, the map on the left-hand page 20 has been annotated by marking the desired route and some notes by the driver on a sheet 22 of transparent material such as acetate. The sheet 22 has a peelable adhesive, of the kind mentioned above, applied to its back as indicated at 24, and is removably adhered thereby over the map on the page 20. The driver places sheet 22 over the map, traces the route on the sheet with a suitable pen or other marking instrument, adds any other annotations required, fits the clip 12 to the altas, and hangs it on hook 14.
At the end of the journey, sheet 22 can be removed without leaving any mark on the page 20, and can be discarded when finished with.
Any suitable transparent material can be used for the sheet 22. The adhesive may be applied in any pattern.
The pack 30 shown in Figure 2 is a blister pack with a paperboard backing sheet 32 carrying a pad 34 of sheets generally similar to sheet 22, a hook 36, a clip 12 and a fluorescent marker 38 for marking the transparent sheets. The hook 36 in this example has its hook member 14 hinged on the back plate 16, for ease of packing. The marker 38 may be in a light shade so as to be relatively translucent. The backing sheet 32 carries an instruction panel 40.
The transparent sheets may be produced in a variety of sizes. Users may include commercial and private road vehicles, aircraft or boat users, walkers and hikers, all typically in connection with maps or charts; architects, engineers, surveyors and the like in connection with site plans, works drawings, and so on.
Claims (6)
1. A document annotating means comprising a sheet of transparent material (eg acetate) having on one side a peelable adhesive of the kind which allows it to adhere temporarily to the surface of a document on which it is overlaid ,but which also allows the sheet to be peeled away easily without leaving any of the adhesive on the document surface, and a marking instrument for marking the overlaid sheet to direct attention to a desired area of the document
2. A document annotating means according to Claim 1, for use by a motorist with a road atlas, further comprising a spring clip for holding the atlas open and means for attachment in an appropriate position within the vehicle, whereby the motorist or a passenger can readily refer to a desired route traced on the overlaid sheet by the marker.
3. A document annotating means according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the marking instrument is a fluorescent marker pen of a light shade so as to be relatively translucent.
4. A document annotating means according to Claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the components are provided as a kit which includes a pad of transparent sheets so that the means can be used repeatedly, and a backing board on which said pad and other components can be stowed.
5. A document annotating means according to Claim 4, wherein the kit is presented as a blister pack.
6. A document annotating means constructed, arranged and adapted for use substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawings.
