Abstract

877,124. Moulding reinforced synthetic resins. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Dec. 5, 1958 [Dec. 6, 1957], No. 39222/58. Class 87(2). A moulded article, e.g. a stamping die is formed by applying to a pattern a mat of metallic filaments impregnated with a thermosetting synthetic resin, placing a layer of loose fibres dispersed in a liquid thermosetting resin on the mat, compressing the layers into a composite consolidated mass, and curing the mass. The metallic filaments may be of steel, copper, silver, nickel, stainless steel, aluminium, brass, bronze, or metal coated synthetic resin or glass fibres, and the loose fibres may be of steel, copper, silver, nickel, aluminium, brass, bronze, glass, rayon, sisal, nylon, or metal coated glass. The preferred thermosetting synthetic resin is an epoxy or a polyester resin, several of which are specified. In the moulding of a stamping die two steel fibre mats 18 impregnated with an epoxy resin are placed against the inner wall of a mould 11, 14 containing a stamping 10 of the desired form. A mix 19 of chopped glass rovings and epoxy resin is placed on the mats 18, and two steel fibre mats 24 are applied above the mix 19. The assembly is then pressed by a platen 20 and cured. A fixture for testing stampings for wear is made in a similar manner except that the layers 24 are omitted, and the mats 18 are covered by a layer of steel fibres impregnated with epoxy resin prepared by blocking steel fibres on to a coating of an epoxy resin applied to the inner wall of the mould before the mats 18 are inserted. The manufacture of hollow and solid moulds and of a plate using matched moulds is also described.
