Abstract

877,098. Waterproofing cellulosic textiles. ARMOUR & CO. Sept. 8, 1959, No. 30702/59. Class 140. A cellulosic fabric, e.g. cotton, mercerized cotton or linen, is rendered water-repellent by impregnating the fabric with a monoalkenylsuccinic acid or its anhydride or salt with a volatile base, e.g. ammonia or morpholine, the alkenyl radical containing 19 to 35 carbon atoms, and heat curing the impregnated fabric. Preferred impregnants are those in which the alkenyl radical is 17-pentatriacontenyl or 11- tricosenyl, but other examples are given. The impregnant may be applied in solution or suspension in water or an organic solvent, e.g. toluene, isopropanol, ethyl acetate, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform and petroleum distillates. Specification 479,753 and U.S.A. Specification 2,381,852 are referred to.
