Abstract
A process for preparing phthalic anhydride comprises in a first stage oxidising at least one alkyl naphthalene to naphthoic acid by means of a molecular-oxygen-containing gas in the liquid phase in the presence of an oxidation catalyst and in a second stage oxidising the naphthoic acid to phthalic anhydride in the vapour phase by means of a molecular-oxygen-containing gas in the presence of an oxidation catalyst. The alkyl naphthalene used in the first stage may contain some unsubstituted naphthalene which does not react in the first stage but which may be oxidised together with the naphthoic acid in the second stage. A further modification of the process comprises oxidising the alkyl naphthalene in the first stage and removing any unchanged alkyl naphthalene from the oxidation product by distillation before the second stage is carried out. The reaction is preferably carried out using methyl naphthalene with air as the oxidising agent in the first stage at 150-180 DEG C. using a cobalt salt e.g. the acetate or naphthenate as catalyst and in the second stage at about 450 DEG C. using a vanadium catalyst e.g. the oxide. The various aspects of the invention are exemplified using methyl and ethyl napthalenes as starting material.
