Abstract
<PICT:0876970/III/1> The number of seed crystals in a crystallising tank 1, comprising solution inlet 40 and crystal outlet 43, is controlled by removal of a portion of the seed crystals together with mother liquor through an annular passage 15 and pipe 24 to a redissolving tank (not shown) and returning the resulting solution together with fresh liquid to be crystallized to the crystallizing tank through inlet 40. The annular passage is formed by inner and outer tubes 16 and 17 respectively. The tubes have upper ends 18 and 19 which flare towards one another to leave an annular gap above which is situated a vertically adjustable inverted V-shaped throttling member 23. Tube 16 has an outwardly flaring lower end 20 below which is situated a stirrer 6. A quiescent zone of high pressure (read by means of manometer 26) exists in passage 15 and is controlled so as to remove seed crystals by means of vertical adjustment of member 23. The desired temperature in the crystallizing tank is maintained by means of a heat-exchange coil 9. The process may be continuous or batchwise. The annular passage may be symmetrical or asymmetrical and of circular or rectangular cross-section. Crystallizable materials specified are ammonium nitrate and sulphate, sodium sulphate and chloride, and potassium sulphate. An example for the crystallization of ammonium sulphate is given.
