Abstract

An ethylene polymerization catalyst is prepared by heating in a dry inert gas (e.g. nitrogen) at 450 DEG -500 DEG C. an intimate mixture of an alkali metal hexachlorotitanate (e.g. K2TiCl6) and powdered magnesium, and passing a controlled amount of oxygen with the inert gas over the heated mixture until it turns a purplish-black colour. The usual hydrocarbon solvents may be utilized in the polymerization process.ALSO:An ethylene polymerisation catalyst is prepared by heating in a dry inert gas (e.g. nitrogen) at 450-500 DEG C. an intimate mixture of an alkali metal hexachlorotitanate (e.g. K2TiCl6) and powdered magnesium, and passing a controlled amount of oxygen with the inert gas over the heated mixture until it turns a purplish-black colour. The usual hydrocarbon solvents may be utilised in the polymerisation process.
