Abstract

876,828. Top-lift attaching machines. SOLER, T. F. Aug. 28, 1959 [Sept. 2, 1958; Oct. 18, 1958; Dec. 9, 1958], No. 29428/59, Classes 17 (1) and 17 (3) A heel tip or tread-piece 13, Fig. 1, is attached to the heel 14 of a shoe by means comprising a rod 10 slidable in an axial bore in the heel, means 11 at the lower end of the rod for detachably securing the heel tip or tread thereto, means for locking the rod in a position to hold the tip or tread tightly and rigidly against the heel bottom, arid means for releasing the rod 10 to permit it to slide in the bore to move the heel tip or tread away from the heel 14 to permit its removal and replacement. The means 11 comprise a hook or L-shaped part formed at the lower end of the rod 10 and adapted to fit into a corresponding recess in the tip or tread. The latter is shown in greater detail in Fig. 2 and consists of a hardened tip or tread piece 13 integral with or secured to a supporting member 12 provided with vertical and horizontal channels 23, 24. The rod 10 is held in locked position against the action of a spring 17 by means of a pivoted bell-crank lever, 18, 19, the arm 19 of which has a forked end adapted to engage below a pin 20 on the rod 10. The rod 10 is released by downward pressure on the end of the arm 18 remote from the pivot 21. In another embodiment (Fig. 3,), the locking means comprises two axially slidable rods 31, 32 in vertical bores 27, 28 respectively, each rod being provided with an annular groove 37,38 respectively so that one of the rods may be locked in position when the ball 30 lodges in the groove carried by that rod. To unlock the rod 32 carrying the heel tread or tip, rod 31 is forced down against the action of spring 33 until its groove 37 is in alignment with groove 38 in rod 32 when the latter is able to move downwardly under the action of spring 34. In a further embodiment (Fig. 6), the locking means comprises a laterally slidable fork member 43 having a knife edge 48 pressed by a spring 46 into engagement with one of a series of notches 47 in the axially slidable rod 41. One end 44 of the member 43 projects beyond the side of the shoe heel 39 whereby it may be forced inwardly to release the rod 41.
