Description

Nov. 17 1925- W. C. STEWART LAsm Original Filed Dec. 2, 1918 Patented Nov. 17, 1925.
' UNITED STATES WILLIAM C. STEWART; or swAMrscoTT, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR To uniTEn SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION; or PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEYI Original application filed December. 2, 1918, Serial No. 264,953.
.16, 1821. Serial No. 478,005.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. STEWART,
a subject of the King. of England, residing at Swampscott, in. the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in East's, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is. like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures. This invention relates to shoe manufacture, and especially to lasts equipped for holding in proper position upon them insoles or other: shoe partsto facilitate the shoe-making operations, and is illustrated in connection with a last of the type described and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,432,217, granted Oct. 17 1922, on my application, of which this application is a division.
It has been proposed, as a labor and material saving expedient in the manufacture of shoes, to position relatively the shoe parts and apparatus used in manufacturing the shoes to which they are to belong, by means of gaging surfaces on the shoe parts or apparatus or both. Accordingly, an important object of the present invention is to provide a last on which a shoe part to be treated thereon can be accurately gaged in position.
To this end the present invention provides a novel gaging member projecting from the surface of the last. Such a member, by engaging a predetermined and prepared gaging surface on a shoe part, will locate the part and the last in desired relative position and prevent relative movement tangent to the last surface. The last shown is provided in a suitable locality, herein shown as the heel part, with a novel retractible and projectable pin adapted to engage a corresponding hole prepared in a shoe part such, for example, as an insole, outsole, or heel.
These and other features of the invention, including certain combinations and arrangements of parts, will be understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the accompanying 50 drawings in which,
Fig. 1 of the drawings illustrates the last and an insole in operative position; and
Fig. 2 illustrates the last and insole as the heel part is being removed from the shoe a. specification,
T ENT .O FF
Divided'and this application fiIedJune as described in said. above-inentionml The last in winch the rear heel corner and carrying bonding members or hooks let and! 16, extending. downwardly on the fore-part and upwardly on the heel part, respectively, to hold the last shoe, but to permit easy collapse and: rem-oval of the heel part from the shoe, as do scribed in said patent.
The heel part is provided with a movable pin 20 normally projecting from the tread surface and mounted in a hole 18 shown as extending vertically through the last. The lower end of the hole 18 is shown as enlarged as at 22 to provide for an offset end 24 for the pin 20. This offset permits convenient location of the two ends of the pin in case it be not desirable to have them collinear, due, for example, to the necessity of putting the thimble in proper position and placing the end 24 at a desired location in the bottom, means, such as a spring-impelled latch 26, engaging with notches 28 in the pin 20 to hold it in projecting or retracted position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively. The latch can be operated by pushing or pulling the knurled head of the pin. 'When the pin is in the position shown in Fig. 1, it projects from the heel seat face of the last in position to engage a hole 30 in the insole 82, or a heel, an outsole, or all three, to position them properly, or in general to co-operatewith position-determining surfaces on shoe parts and assist in securing predetermined positioning of such parts relatively to one another and to the last. The pin may be moved upwardly in the "last to disengage it from the shoe parts and withdraw such resistance as it would otherwise offer to the removal of the last from the shoe when it is desired to effect such removal as shown in Fig. 2, and more fully described in said patent above referred to.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a last havin a lateral surface arranged to support a slice upper during ordipatvnt. it present. invention. 15 embodied. may be of. any desiredtype and line of cut centered.
in operative position in the nary shoemaking operations, a thimble adapted to cooperate with a jack pin and a socket in the heel part of the last; a pin slidably fitting the socket and permanently mounted therein, said pin being of substantially uniform cross-section and arranged either to be projected substantially from the heel seat face of the last by a rectilinear sliding movement to cooperate with a hole of corresponding size in a shoe part or to remain in a retracted position, at will.
2. A last having in its heel part a sliding pin extending vertically through the last and having a head at the cone of the last, said pin being adapted to be moved to cause the heel seat end of the pin to project from or be retracted within the heel seat face of the last.
3. A last having in its heel part a sliding pin extending vertically through the last and having a head at the cone of thelast, said pin being ofl'set laterally near the heel seat face of the last and adapted to be moved Within the limits of said head and offset 2 portion to cause the heel seat end of the pin to project from or be retracted within the heel seat face of the last.
4. A last having a lateral surface against which the upper is drawn during the lasting operation and having permanently mounted in its heel part a pin having a rectilinear sliding in-and-out movement, constructed and arranged to project from the heel seat face of the last and cooperate with a hole of the corresponding size previously formed in a shoe part or to remain in a retracted position, at Will, and a latch to hold the pin in retracted position 5. A divided last comprising a forepartand a separable heel part movable relatively to the forepart in a direction having a component parallel to the bottom of the last, in combination with a sliding pin permanently mounted in the heel part of the last and constructed and arranged to cooperate with a hole of corresponding size previously formed in a shoe part.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WILLIAM G. STEVV'ART.
