Be it known that I, ELI BROTHERS, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Lasts, of which the-foll'owing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specificat on, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to lasts. The last herein described is designed particularly for use in the manufacture of stitch-down shoes, but the invention may be embodied in lasts employed in making shoes of other kinds.
The invention provides a lastdesign'ed esand has particular provision for producing the desired fullness at the toe of the shoe. This last is intended more especially to be curing the sole to the shoe and it may then be removed from the shoe and be replaced parts to the shoe its finished shape. This method of making shoes by the successive claimed but is covered by an application filed contemporaneously herewith, Serial No. 454,441.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,-

bodiment' of the invention and the last shown in dotted lines is of a'form heretofore used, it will be seen that the two lasts are the same in length and their soles are also equal in width at all points.
From an inspection of Figs. 2, 3 and 4,1it
will be seen that the last embodying the presentinvention diminishes in width from I the sole upward and in this respect difiers 'from the ordinary form of last. At the toe in the vicinity of line 22 (if Fig. 1 the present last is of somewhat greater, height than. the prior last. shown in Fig. 2, the ridge which constitutes the high portion of the last at this point, is symmetrically located with reference to the sides of the last so that the sides are free] from overhanging portions. The junction of the sole with the sides at the shank has a sharp edge instead of being rounded and, as
will appear from. Fig. 3, the sides gadjacent to the sole constitute gaging {-abutments against which the upper of shoe is pressed and which locate in proper position the projecting flanges of the upper. It will be seen from this figure that the diminished width of the last from the sole upward is compensated for by an increase in depth.
The last herein show'n comprises a body portion 2 and an instep block 4. The toe tip lasting the toe portion of a shoe the upper at the toe may be pressed manually by the operator into this cavity and held there while the projecting flange of the upper is being secured to the sole edge. This provides a certain amount of fullness in. the up per at the toe which will permit the final shape of the toe to be somewhat more full than would otherwise be the case. In the preferred mode of use of the last Furthermore, as is shown as embodying the present invention,
the operations of lasting and securing the sole to a shoe are performed while the shoe is mounted upon this last. Thereafter the last may be removed and a last of the form shown in dotted lines upon the drawings may be substituted therefor. This gives to the shoe the ordinary contour which'is'desired and remains in the shoe during the finishing operations.
