Abstract

876,795. Linear motors. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION Jan. 15, 1958 [Jan. 23, 1957], No. 2373/57. Class 35. [Also in Group IX] In a linear induction motor in which the stator field travels inwardly from either end to produce a reciprocating motion as described in Specification 763,362, each end is provided with a spring abutment to produce a rapid reversal of the armature and reduce the length of stator needed. The stator may be in the form of a tunnel, but a double stator is preferred. The invention may be used for shuttle propulsion, for coal-cutting machines, and in the form shown, for winding thread on to a bobbin (not shown) driven by a roller 34 (see Group IX). The stators 15, 16 on either side of the reciprocating armature are wound to provide fields travelling inwardly towards the centre. The armature comprises a copper block 36 having V-shaped magnetic inserts 37, and carries a thread guiding arm 38 and guiding rollers 41 at its top surface. The armature is supported on a pivot 40, on which are also pivoted arms 42, 43 loaded by springs 44 and faced with rubber blocks 50 to provide the motion-reversing abutments for the armature. As shown, the stator slots are equally spaced to provide uniform speed of travel, but if desired, this spacing may be varied to give variable speed.
