Abstract
3.5-Dialkylpyridines are produced by passing a vapour mixture of a saturated aliphatic alcohol having at least 3 carbon atoms, formaldehyde and ammonia over a silicaalumina catalyst. The reaction is preferably carried out at 250-500 DEG C. and atmospheric pressure. Inert diluents such as steam or nitrogen may be present. Preferably the catalyst is a petroleum cracking catalyst having a surface area of 50-450 sq.metres/gram and the molar ratio of alcohol to formaldehyde is in the range from 2:1 to 1:10. In the examples propanol is converted to 3.5-dimethylpyridine and n-butanol to 3.5-diethyl pyridine.
