Abstract
876,561. Crop sprayers. AMES CO., W. R. Sept. 23, 1959 [March 30, 1959], No. 32384/59. Class 69 (3). A rotary boom-type sprinkler has a hollow rotary mast 17 from which booms 18 radially extend, and each carries a fixed main liquid nozzle 19 at its outer end, a fixed auxiliary nozzle 20 which, under the influence of the prevailing wind, provides intermittent liquid precipitation in a predetermined area during a portion of each revolution, driving nozzles 21 which rotate the mast at a substantially constant speed under variable wind conditions, and sub-boom sprinklers 22 attached to the booms. The mast rotates on a wheeled frame which includes a tube 24 by which liquid is fed to the mast and booms, and the latter are supported by frame members 45, Fig. 3, guy-wires 46 and cables. Each auxiliary nozzle 20, Fig. 10, has an outlet orifice 71 directed generally parallel to the boom and is liquid fed from the boom via a valve 72 operated by an arm 79 attached to a wind-vane 78. The arrangement is such that as the sprinkler rotates and the boom starts its upwind swing, Fig. 7, the valve 72 is closed, whereas during the. downwind swing the valve is opened by the wind acting on the wind-vane, and an otherwise uncovered area 67 is sprayed. Each boom may have a number of auxiliary nozzles arranged to operate at various wind velocities to compensate for a neglected spray area 67 which would normally expand with increasing wind velocity. Each driving nozzle comprises an L-shaped body 81, Fig. 12, with an outlet orifice 82 and a windvane 84, whereby the nozzle may be swung by the wind about the vertical axis of a conduit portion 86 and against the force of a spring 94. The nozzle swings between two stop positions, and the arrangement is such that when the boom rotates in prevailing wind the driving nozzles are swung on the boom so as to increase or decrease the driving torque to keep the boom speed substantially constant. Each boom may have a number of driving nozzles each with control springs of different strength so that the various nozzles move in response to wind velocities of varying intensity. Each subboom include a vertical conduit 110, a valve 113 and a distribution pipe 111 with outlets.
