Abstract

876,548. Hydraulic clutches. BEHR, M., [trading as SUDDEUTSCHE KUHLERFABRIK J. F. BEHR]. July 8, 1959 [July 8, 1958], No. 23470/59. Class 69 (2). [Also in Group XXVII] An hydraulic clutch for driving the cooling fan 33 of a radiator, or the fan of an air conditioning or boiler induced draught installation comprises a housing 14 surrounding a hydrostatic clutch, such as a vane pump, gear pump, piston pump or the like 9, 10, 11, the shaft 1 of the pump serving as a driving member, and the housing 14 as a driving member for the fan, fluid circulation taking place in the cavity between the housing and the pump and being regulated by a thermostat controlling a spring-loaded valve built into the clutch. As shown, the shaft 1 drives a member 9 slotted to receive radial vanes 10 which engage the inner surface of an eccentric 11 carried by the cylindrical projection 12 of a cover plate 13 secured to the housing 14. One end of the shaft receives a screwed plug 26 in which slides a valve member 21 abutted by a spring 20, the other end of which engages a rod 23 connected to a thermostat 24 in a cooling chamber 6 of the engine. A water pump wheel 7 is mounted on the shaft 1 on which is mounted a pulley 8 driven from the engine. The valve may be initially adjusted by a handle projecting from the housing or by removing a plate 28 and adjusting the plug 26. The opening of the valve is controlled by the thermostat to vary the amount of fluid pumped through the housing in the direction of the arrows and the degree of drive imparted to the housing and fan. A baffle 32 directs the fluid against the housing which is provided with cooling fins. The clutch may be connected by pipes to an external fluid tank.
