Guide rails 1 for a mine cage or skip are each supported from adjacent their upper ends only and are maintained at their proper spacing by means of spacers which are distributed over the length of the rails and which permit free longitudinal movement of the rails. In Fig. 1, the rails 1 are secured adjacent their upper ends to cross girders 2 secured to the shaft walls, spacers 3 being secured to the shaft walls and having corrosion resistant bearing surfaces to prevent rusting-in of the rails. In a modification, Fig. 3, rails 1a, 1b, 1c are secured to girders 6, retractable guides 4 or corner guides 5 being provided at loading levels. The spacers may be in the form of cross-bars secured at their ends to the shaft walls and carrying guiding projections which engage over the rail flanges to guide the rails against transverse displacement without affecting their longitudinal displacement, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown). As shown in Fig. 7, the spacers are in the form of frames consisting of cross-bars 9, to which the rails 1 are secured, and connecting bars 11, the whole frame being guided for vertical displacement. In a modification. Fig. 11 (not shown), the cross-bars 9 are connected by means of pivoted links to brackets, secured to the shaft walls. In further modifications, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown), the spacer frames 9, 11 are supported on springs attached to the shaft walls.
