Abstract

876,364. Centrifugal separators. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov 10, 1945 [Sept. 20, 1944], No. 30109/45. Class 23 [Also in Group XXXII] Each end of the rotor of a separator supported by stub shafts is provided with a vibration damper comprising fixed and movable interleaving sleeves surrounding the respective stub shaft, and means for maintaining a body of damping fluid between the sleeves, the sleeves having means connecting them to the end of the rotor and the respective stub shaft at a position spaced from the interleaving portions of the sleeves. The rotor 20 is driven by an electric motor 26 and rotates within a housing 21 on the stub shafts 22, 23 supported by bearings 24, 25, 27. The lower damper comprises a member 85 fixed to the lower end of the rotor and to the shaft 23, and journalled in a self centering bearing 86 which is carried by a base 87 supporting the movable sleeves 88. The fixed sleeves 90 are supported by a base 89 fixed to the housing, and relative rotation of the fixed and movable sleeves is prevented by flexible members 92 and stop pins 95. The lower damper is enclosed by a cap 101, 102, spring pressed seals 106, 112 sealing the enclosure 100 from the space 75 about the rotor. Damper fluid is supplied to and withdrawn from the enclosure by ducts: 120, 122 respectively, and oil is supplied to and withdrawn from the bearing 86 by ducts (not shown). The upper damper is of similar construction to the lower damper.
