[Also in Groups XI and XVII] A stove or hot plate has releasable magnetic means associated with the heating means to retain cooking vessels (see Group XVII) thereon. As shown, Fig. 1, arcuate pole pieces 13 are carried by a casing 12 housing a permanent magnet and mounted on a non-magnetic base 14. The magnet is mounted on a spindle 11 and is rotatable through 90 degrees to a position in which the pole pieces form a magnetic shunt path. Control devices for the magnetic means and for the heating means which may be gas, oil or electricity, are preferably so interlocked that heat can only be applied when magnetism has been established and/or the magnetism can only be terminated when the heat has been cut off. In another embodiment, the circuit of an electromagnet is arranged to be energized before the heating element and deenergized by a switch operating after the heating element has been cut off.
