Abstract

876,028. Control of several A.C. motors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 20, 1959 [Aug. 20, 1958], No. 26816/58. Class 38 (3). [Also in Group XL (a)] The movement of nuclear reactor control rods is controlled by supplying the rod-actuating motors sequentially, each with a predetermined number of cycles from a low frequency generator. A continuously rotating induction motor 21 drives the rotor 71 of an induction regulator through one of four clutches 28, 29, 35, 36 according to direction and speed required. The induction regulator is connected through transformers and biased rectifiers to provide outputs X, Y 90 degrees apart, with a neutral N, as described in Specification 842,649. A control circuit for the " odd " numbered rods is described, including transfer of low frequency supply from one motor (or group of motors) to the next by the closing of a cam-operated switch 57 when 400 cycles have been supplied. During lowering of the rods the movement is not interrupted, but during raising a further manual operation is necessary to start a newly connected motor (or group of motors). A second cam-operated switch 55 ensures that the induction regulator stops in the negative halfcycle. A limit switch operated by a rod at the top of its travel short circuits any motor attempting to overwind a rod, a free-wheel device protects when a motor attempts to lower a rod at the bottom. To shape the neutron flux pattern certain rods may be kept in position, their actuating motors being by-passed. To prevent rapid raising of the rods, an idler pinion 44 may be removed. Specifications 817,332, 820,460, 832,367, 833,532, 835,448 and 848,521 also are referred to.
